  • What causes ridges in our nails?

Nail ridges are fairly common in older people (I hope you're not offended if you happen to be young!). There is actually a medical term, ';onychorrhexis,'; for this condition. Splitting occurs because of dryness, which causes the nails to get hard and brittle, leading to splitting near the nail tips. This can occur spontaneously or with minor trauma. Wrapping of nails or artificial tips may actually make the problem worse by not letting the nails ';breathe';. Does stress make them worse? Who knows! Stress probably is related to many conditions.

Dermatologists recommend using a strong moisturizer that contains lactic acid (like Eucerin cream) twice a day, especially after a shower or when the nails are wet. It may take several weeks before you see results. If the splitting persists, you should see a dermatologist to investigate the possibility of infection. What causes ridges in our nails?
I have one nail with ridges in it. I know that the cause of this problem is that I often wear artificial nail tips and this one particular nail, I tore the nail tip off...pulling away at the natural nail along with being a nail biter. I have noticed that the less I wear tips and avoid biting (along with regular grooming) the better the nail looks. What causes ridges in our nails?
Heredity, if they run vertically. If they are horizontal, could be a health problem.
I've heard damage to your cuticle can cause ridges. I've smashed quite a few nails in my time and they never seem to grow back without some type of ridges. (I'm healthy and don't do drugs)

What does ridges on toe nails mean?

Usually it's caused by a slow thyroid. Harmless but annoying when the tops of the nails start splitting. What does ridges on toe nails mean?
Nothing Ive had them for a long time and im just fine. But get somone elses opinion too dont trust me that much.

I have vertical ridges on my finger and toe nails. What does this mean?

i have that too and i really dont know why. some people have said it could be a sort of vitamin deficiancy..(cant spell that, sorry) and others think its just normal.

Why have i got deep ridges across my nails?

There are several deficiencies which can cause ridges in the nails. They can also be a normal quirk of a persons genetic make up (I have ridged nails and have had them checked out and there is no medical cause for them!).

Yours could be from several causes and to find out the cause you need to see a doctor.

The ridges can show deficiences which occured up to 6 months ago as they grow slowly! Useless fact of the day!!!!;Why have i got deep ridges across my nails?
I had this problem many years ago my doc told me not to work so hard as I WAS workaholic he said it was stress related not sure it's true but in the last 10 years I have done little work due to nervous breakdown and hey my nails are fine, so maybe something in it

What does this mean? Ridges in my nails?

I've noticed lately since I've let my nails grow out that I have ridges (like bumps) horizontally on my nails?

I do smoke and I know I need to quit. Some people say it's a sign of bad health? Is it genetic because my mom %26amp; my grams have the same thing on their thumb nail.

What does it mean exactly? What does this mean? Ridges in my nails?
I have vertical ridges on my nails. I smoke too. The Doctor said it is a common occurence and nothing to worry about. What does this mean? Ridges in my nails?
It could mean anything. Smoking decreases your body's ability to heal itself, and since hair and nails are less vital parts of your body, nutrition is often pulled from them when other more important parts need it. Also, it may indicate a lack of certain vitamins. Try taking a fish oil supplement, or a hair/skin/nails supplement. After two weeks taking these I noticed my nails were more even, and stronger. GL!

I have small ridges running along all of my finger nails. The ridges run from cuticle to the tip. What is it?

How old are you? My mother was told that those ridges were just wrinkles in the fingernails and that people get them as they age, same as skin wrinkles.I have small ridges running along all of my finger nails. The ridges run from cuticle to the tip. What is it?
You are turning into a ';Klingon';I have small ridges running along all of my finger nails. The ridges run from cuticle to the tip. What is it?
It is nail fungus, you can treated with products that they have over the counter. But sometimes they work and sometimes not. Go to a Doctor and they have specific medicine for that, a tablet, I cant remember the name. Also what I have done for myself, is put Hydrogen Peroxide inside my nail every time I remember and it went away. I only had it on one finger though. Good luck.

I have had this problem for 4years,was told by my GP that it could be caused by the Prescribed Tablets I was on.

have you ever worn artificial nails? cause if your female its from them, ya know the glue on or gel or acryllic ones!
You could have a mineral deficiency or a thyroid problem. Get some bloodwork done. Take multivitamins with minerals.
It's normal. Most people have vertical ridges - check the website below for more information if you think you have a problem.
