What cause's ridge's on your finger nails?

if they're vertical they could indicate poor general health, poor nutrient absorption, and the ridges may also indicate a kidney disorder.

if they're horizontal they can indicate severe stress (both psychological or physical). Person is also more vulnerable to arthritis. What cause's ridge's on your finger nails?
I read an article on WebMD that says that...

';An iron deficiency can cause the nail bed to be thin and concave and have raised ridges. ';

Lots of good information there, for everyone really. Examine your nails people, they tell the story of your life and health somehow. Check it out. What cause's ridge's on your finger nails?
vitamin deficency or damage to the nail bed
Because of all the crap chemicals and medicines that we have ingested over the years, our body builds up immunities, even to our own hormones. Ridges on your finger nails are caused by your body building up an ammunity to your thyroid, or whatever chemicals it disperses through your body. Not a good thing. But I don't know how to fix it. I have them too. But not everyone does. It depends on your personal chemical makeup and how this reacts to the madmade chemicals that we ingest.
i dunno
lack of vitamins... maybe ';E';
Damage to the nail bed (where the nail starts, under the cuticle). I have one on my index finger from slamming my hand in a file cabinet.
It can mean you have a deficiency in your diet, or if you have worn artificial nails in the past, they are a big offender, they make the nail bed so weak, that buffing them is the only thing that will help them recover.
ditto

Damage to the nail bed (where the nail starts, under the cuticle).
I've heard illness, and stress are generally the cause.
Ridges or (corruguations) in nails occur when nail growth is uneven, usually because of illness or injury. Gentle buffing can minimize ridges. Try a Ridge Filler to help level the nail surface, making shallow ridges and other imperfections practically disappear while conditioning with Calcium and Pro-Vitamin B5.

Advice on ridged nails?

I went to the doctor's today to have them look at my nails. They looked at the ridges and waves and ';pitty'; appearance of my nails and diagnosed it as a mild form of psoriasis. I found this weird because I have virtually no other sings of the condition. I've heard from a lot of people that it can be due to a specific vitamin deficiency or lack of calcium. They prescribed me a cream (for skin, oddly enough) that I am supposed to rub into my nails twice a day. Has anyone else had an experience like that this? Does anyone know how to get rid of this problem completely? I just don't feel like psoriasis is the cause...I only have the ridges on maybe four of my fingers and a couple of pits on a few others. It's kind of unsightly.Advice on ridged nails?

you need to eat more proteins and maybe you can take some multi vitamin, that will help you to fix the problem.

  • Ridged nails=HIV?

do ridged nails indicated a kidney problem or a deficiency in vitamin B? or perhaps something more serious like HIV? thanks!Ridged nails=HIV?
Likewise, I think the HIV is a bit extreme. You'd likely have more symptoms of other problems (fever, fatigue, diarrhea, recurrent illnesses) than just the nails.

Click on the link below to see some nail examples. Finding something that looks like what you're dealing with may help you in the right direction. Aside from that, please see your medical care provider.

Your mind doesn't go to HIV unless you lead a risky lifestyle.

I think you better go see your doctor and get a complete physical.
Could be lime disease. You can not really come up with a diganotsis just by having symptoms of ridged nails.

    malnourishment.

Vertical nail ridges, which extend from your cuticle to the tip of your nail, are fairly common and often become more numerous as you age. Vertical ridges in your nails are not a health concern. Although the exact cause of such ridging isn't known, heredity may play a role.

If your fingernails change color or develop horizontal ridges, see your doctor. These changes may indicate underlying health problems, such as respiratory disease, malnutrition or even heart attack.

    Why are my nails ridged?

Hi. Are you talking about fingernails or toenails? Well either one can have a fungal infection but it is usually seen on the toenails and a fungal infection can do different things to your nail beds. Your best answer is of course see a Dr of podiatry that specializes in feet and nails. There is also many vitamins that our body needs but too much can do as much harm as too little so before you try the vitamins you should see a Dr and he/she can give you the correct diagnosis and the medications needed to cure this. It could be oral meds as well as topical meds used to treat this. It can be a time consuming task to completely cure this but in time if you follow the directions you will have good nails again. Go see a Dr for a definite diagnosis or try over the counter meds but they may not work and you will end up at the Dr anyway so i would start there. Good luck..Why are my nails ridged?
Probably a vitamin deficiency or a fungus.

Everyone has some sort of ridge in their nails. You can get them buffed out or you can do it yourself.

It doesn't sound like you are dealing with malnutrition - however, vitamins are only supplements. Be sure to eat properly too. :-)
Some people just have have ridges, esp. if you nails are thicker than average (like mine are). You can file and buff them smooth or just leave it be.
That many vitamins a day can harm you. see a doctor.
Maybe you need a good manicure. ';Sand'; them, buff them, and polish them.
file with a nail file DO NOT cut the nails.

place a small piece of garlic into a clear nail polish and apply once a week by the time you notice your nails will be beautiful. The whole garlic thing is a lil stinky but worth it! Believe me My nails are natural and many people always ask to touch them because they look fake
Be sure you are taking 30 mg zinc daily. Nail problems are often due to zinc deficiency.
I have them too but I dont worry about it.
i have them to its not to bad cuz its not going to kill you but i also heard its cuz of to much led so just eat good and if it doesnt go away it really doesnt matter
maybe it depends which way the ridges are. vertical with your fingers are usually a sign of poor nutrition. if you have horizontal ridges it's usually from and injury to your fingers
30 vitamins a day??? hypervitaminosis much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    um, 30 vitamins a day....ewww, yuck!

There are lots of things that can cause your fingernails to do this, like over use of certain drugs (and probably vitamins too I would guess) or viruses or diseases...see a doctor.
it might be from not enough iron in ur diet cause i have them too and i have some thing where my body doesnt have enough iron so i have to have nore than normal ppl so that might be it nexxt time u go to the doctor point that out.
I heard it was a sign of a thyroid problem.
I notice I get this from When i tear my nail, maybe it could be from that...
.If you are taking that many vitamins you could be poisoning your body with them, I don't know if this could be causing the problem with your nails, but its dangerous to over do vitamins, so I'd cut them down right away if I was you.
File them with a nail file.
I see like a lot of kids at my school with tan skin that have them.
I used to have that problem, but then I went to a nail salon and they put a liquid on it and the ridges dissapeared after awhile. You should go to a nail salon too.

There are some natural remedies that are really useful if you have brittle nails/ hair. Just go to your local health food shop and ask there. Also there are some creams that really help. I find Vaseline Intensive Care for hands and nails really good, and its really inexpensive too... also check the type of soaps that you use- whether it be washing up liquid, hand soaps etc., this may also be adding to your problem. Try getting ones that contain moisturiser. Hope this helps =)

put your hands in a bowl filled with olive oil and rest them there for 5-10 minutes
I think they make a cream or something. You can get it at a pharmacy or wal-mart.
buy cream with more oil/fat than water in it.befor you go to bed,put the cream on your hands.aferwards you put gloves on and you`ll sleep with them.you have to it several times again.after 2 weeks you`ll see that your hand are getting better.

Ridges in just my thumb nails?

I have really bad ridges on both my thumb nails. There is a line going up the center of each thumb vertically with all these small lines and bumps horizontally. Does anyone know how I can fix them? Yes I do have the bad habit of picking the skin around my nails, which I have been trying to stop. They just look so ugly, I am very self conscious about them. If anyone knows how to get rid of them please help me.Ridges in just my thumb nails?
From experience I know that ridges in nails sometimes indicate a medical condition and you should speak with your doctor regarding this. It might be fungal. It could just be hereditary.Ridges in just my thumb nails?
Moisturize them. It could also indicate a vitamin deficiency.
This could be a lack of the right vitamins or something really serious. Or you could have nail fungus. Go to a doctor and take care of it. A free clinic or health department in your town should be of major help if you are low on funds, like most of us. Don't assume the worst or take for granted the best. Be brave and go to a nurse or REAL doctor and show them your concerns. Please....soon.
You can get rid of the ridges by buffing your nails.

What can I do about my ridged fingernails? Ridges go down my nails to the cuticles and they split and break!?

My cuticles look ragged even though I use handcream and my nails look short and all different sizes. I used to have nice long nails but can't get them to grow and they look horrible, especially in the winter. I've tried different nail strengthening polishes and I take the vitamins recommended for the condition.

Has anyone had this problem and sorted it out? I'd be really interested to know if you've used either a cream, polish, herbs or homeopathic remedy that has worked.

Thanx 4 your help. xWhat can I do about my ridged fingernails? Ridges go down my nails to the cuticles and they split and break!?
Nail Polish stops the oxygenation in the nail making them yellow, buff and polish naturally, maybe its and the lack of Iron in your diet, but thats a guess go to a diet doctor and find that one out.

To make them grow stronger eat Jelly (Jell-o if American) because of the gelatin it will help with the strength, also cut and file down (this helps to thicken and strengthen) for a while until your nails are back to how they one were!

It does sound like some form of vitamin deficiency but popping pills is not the answer food is the best way of providing vitamins change your diet to obtain the vitamins you need but the change wont be instant as nails grow about a millimetre a week so it could be four months before your nails are back to their former glory
ridges in your nails is often caused by deficiencies in vitamins and calcium.

Try inproving your diet and dont paint your nails unless its with a protector. Keep them short until the problem is solved. Long nails with ridges in them look awful so keep them shorter.

Nails on my hands? horizontal ridges?

not all of the 5 but on 1 of them its obvious and i think others are developing.

    they're horizontal.

    whats wrong?

i take dairy products regularly and im 16 as well?

i look after my nails tooNails on my hands? horizontal ridges?
There are many things that the fingernails can tell you, but only some markings are abnormal.

Pale nails, for example, may be a sign of anaemia, whereas blue nails could reflect heart or lung trouble, toxic chemical action on blood cells or congenital heart disease in infants. Distorted nails which have a thickened yellowish tinge may suggest a fungus infection, psoriasis, vitamin deficiency or hardening of the arteries. If the fingernails have clubbed, in other words very concave when you look at them from the side, this could suggest an abscess, chronic infection, cancer of the lung or chronic heart disease.

White lines and horizontal ridges, however, although in exceedingly rare cases can be due to arsenic poisoning, are almost certainly normal. The nails grow from the nail bed and in most people the growth across the nail bed is a little up and down, which results in a corrugated appearance. It's quite normal and not a sign of any disease process.Nails on my hands? horizontal ridges?
Everyone gets ridges in their nails. It's normal. A way to get rid of them is to buff them out. I dunno how true this is, but I heard it's a myth that lack of calcium contributes to this. Just buy a nail buffer in you don't already have one and just buff them out. I am not sure where you are located, but it may also have something to do with the change in weather. If you live in a dry climate, than it's possible they are just reacting to the dryness and the weather warming up. No moisture in the air.
me too. is this a bad thing?? ahh help! i didnt know!

Horizontal ridges on my thumb nails...?

I have ridges (horizontal/side to side) on my thumb nails so they're always bumpy. They've grown like that ever since college. I don't remember them being like that before then.

Why do some people have them and some people don't?

How do I get rid of them?Horizontal ridges on my thumb nails...?
I saw your question and realized I have the SAME thing on all my fingernails, so I decided to google it. I thought it was nothing but look what I found.

Nail textures: Vertical ridges that appear on the nail can indicate disorders as simple as iron deficiency, poor absorption of vitamins and nutrients, overall poor health or they could indicate something as serious as kidney trouble. (So, you see why consulting your physician is so important.) These vertical ridges, as well as bumpy nails, can also suggest that one is prone to developing arthritis. Ridges running horizontally across the nail can indicate physical or mental stress.

Uhoh. =(Horizontal ridges on my thumb nails...?
get your thyroid checked. I have them too, I went to my Dr. and I asked them what the ridges were from, he said that I could be hypothyroid, he drew a thyroid panel and I was hypothyroid. It is one of the symptoms.

You Can Buff The Ridges Off,

Just Get A Buffer From Superdrug Or Boots,

Or Walmart If Your In The USARidges on my nails..?
If you've worn artificial or acrylic nails for long periods of time, then that could be one of the causes. It could also be vitamin deficiency. To treat them, get a nail block (4-sided buffer), cuticle oil, and a nail strengthener. Sally Hansen products are inexpensive, nice quality, and can be found at any drugstore. To prevent this in the future, you should take multi-vitamins daily. Also, if it's okay with you, don't wear fake nails any more. The nail strengthener should make your real nails healthy enough to grow long and strong.
You need a special nail file

they usually have about 4 different surfaces on them- ones for filing like normal, one gets rid of ridges and the other two buff the nails, and they're really cheap too, if you go to any nail sections in shops I'm sure they'll have them, you only need to use the ridge smoothing section once a month though
Weak, brittle or ridged nails are usually caused by a poor diet. you need to reassess your diet or speak to a doctor to check your not anemic or lacking in something. MAke sure you eat healthly, and drink plenty. Keep them short until you see an improvement, and buy a good nail conditioner to keep them strong.
i have those too. they are so annoying. but i don't think there is a way to get rid of them. just wear clear nail polish because when i do the ridges seem to be less feel able because the nail polish fills them.
I also have them.... Besides multivitamins and no more acrylic nails :-( , I now buff and moisturize them before applying clear polish.
rub oil into the cuticle to soft the nail. you can get all sort s of creams but the best old fashioned way is oil- even cookign oil.
I have these. I've been told that it's because I don't eat enough iron or something.

  • Y R my cuticles super thick; finger nails have vertical ridges; thumbnails have horizontal bumps & bubbles?

About a year ago, my cuticles and fingernails changed dramatically. I have always had tendancies towards horizontal bumps in my thumbnails and fingernails that would sort of curl down in places...but there have been long periods of time where they were long, beautiful and perfect. But a year ago, they started getting thick vertical ridges, some even splitting vertically. My thumbnails now have thick and thin places that seem to come from horizontal bumps...they are really weird. I also have these bubble like things in one thumbnail that actually peels in the middle of it, and a vertical ridge in the same spot can even cause it to split vertically in the middle of the nail. I must have some deficiency or something. Perhaps low thyroid? It has gotten worse...and my cuticles are super thick now and I have less feeling in them. I even have to trim them with clippers because they get so thick all around my nail bed and the sides. I hope someone can tell me what I can do about it!Y R my cuticles super thick; finger nails have vertical ridges; thumbnails have horizontal bumps %26amp; bubbles?
sounds like a fungus. Go to the dermatologist and get it looked at. simple meds could fix. My aunt hadsomethinglike that... not as severe. She got it from gardening without usig gloves. It went a way with meds.Y R my cuticles super thick; finger nails have vertical ridges; thumbnails have horizontal bumps %26amp; bubbles?
Sounds like it could be a deficiency or maybe a side effect from medication.

Also, do you ever get your nails done, with acrylics or other materials? I would do my nails with press ons and acrylics every week and I started to get dips and ridges in my nails.
    Hi

i have the exact same thing...

let me guess, your cuticles aren't only thick, but extremely dry as well? so dry they crack sometimes and you have to trim them off?

I've always been told its just my eczema and it's actually under the nail in the nailbed. I know that ridges in the nails can mean a deficiency - i think either zinc or keratin from orange vegetables like carrots and red/orange peppers.

i have not yet found a way to get rid of it.

I also take a few corticosteroids for asthma/allergies...i've been on corticosteroids for as long as i can remember, and my nails have also been the way they are as long as i can remember.

So, i don't really have an answer for why it's happening...but if you have eczema/psoriasis and/or you're on corticosteroids, maybe that's it.

What i do to hide it is just file and buff my nails. Right on the bed of the nail. The trick is not filing too much because, like you said, there are thin spots.

sometimes when the thin spots get really bad i get press on nails. I only put glue around the edges of the nail so that i dont run the risk of breaking the thin spot. That at least offers protection because they get VERY sensetive to the touch.

if you find any similarities in my story, let me know. I've been trying to figure this one out too, and doctors have been no help at all.

Vertical ridging usually appears in middle age and is simply a sign of ageing. The ridges extend from the tip of the nail backwards and become more numerous with time. If the appearance of the nails is a problem they can be gently smoothed with an emery board or nail file.

Ridges that go from one side of the nail to the other are known as transverse ridges or 'Beau's lines'. These appear when a temporary interruption of nail growth occurs. This interruption may be caused when the body experiences an illness, such as a heart attack or pneumonia, or any other shock to the system. Trauma to the nail can also be responsible. The ridges generally grow out in time. How quickly this happens depends on the speed at which the nails usually growRidges on my nails..?
This is a sign of severe lack of a particular vitimin in your system...

(I am only guessing ZINC or FOLIC ACID?? I was told years ago by a naturapath, but can't remember, sorry.)

If deficiency continues, nail could split, vertically (ouch) or long term deficiency still, is very hard on liver or kidneys. A good naturapath may shed light.
I have them too, not sure what causes it or how you can get rid of them! I just dont take any notice of it.
It is just how your nail is shaped. it's genetic so i don't think you can.
i've got them too, it's either lacking something or too much of something, maybe in our diet.

What does it mean when you have ridges across your nails?

indents across fingernailsWhat does it mean when you have ridges across your nails?
Vertical nail ridges, which run from the cuticle to the tip of the nail, are fairly common and not a reason to worry. They don't indicate serious illness. These ridges typically increase with age. The exact cause isn't known. But heredity may play a role.

    If your fingernails change colour or develop horizontal ridges, see your doctor. This may indicate an underlying health problem.';

Nail ridges are fairly common in older people (I hope you're not offended if you happen to be young!). There is actually a medical term, ';onychorrhexis,'; for this condition. Splitting occurs because of dryness, which causes the nails to get hard and brittle, leading to splitting near the nail tips. This can occur spontaneously or with minor trauma. Wrapping of nails or artificial tips may actually make the problem worse by not letting the nails ';breathe';. Does stress make them worse? Who knows! Stress probably is related to many conditions.

Dermatologists recommend using a strong moisturiser that contains lactic acid (like Eucerin cream) twice a day, especially after a shower or when the nails are wet. It may take several weeks before you see results. If the splitting persists, you should see a dermatologist to investigate the possibility of infection.

It is not a vitamin or calcium deficiency, this is just a myth! What does it mean when you have ridges across your nails?
Not usually a good sign. Go see your Doctor!!
    Lack of calcium
lack of calcium and zinc. also you might be damaging your nails if you have a heavy job or your hands are wet for long periods
Your missing somthing in your diet! not calcuim!!!! Go to the dr
That's normal... I don't think it means anything really... I have them... mine aren't really indents... I think everyone has them...? You can always file the top of your nails so they are nice and smooth... I don't though...
I heard it means your lacking calcium
Without seeing them, I can't tell. Could be injury - whether you remember doing it or not. Hereditary. Fungus....
either a vitamin deficiancy or a calcium deficiancy
the base of your nail is irregular. this may be due to several causes such as psoriasis. look after your cuticles with moisturiser and it may improve the up and coming nail. Pushing your cuticles down does not improve this condition, it will make it worse.
It's a common sign of a nutritional deficiency. The structure of the nails is made up largely of a protein called keratin and a combination of minerals, including calcium, sulphur, potassium, selenium and other trace elements. Strong, healthy nails are therefore dependant on the sufficient intake of such key elements...!!!
It may be a sign of being under the weather or malnourished. We all have growth lines on our nails, that's normal. Eating jelly (gelatine) and drinking milk / eating cheese may help.
    You need more calcium.

Sounds like it could be a vitamin definciency. I'd take her to the doctor to have her vitamin and mineral levels checked just to make sure.My 10yr old daughter has ridges on her finger nails..what are they?

Can be genetic, but also diet related. Is she getting a balanced diet?
    It's one of three things:

    - calcium deficency

    - genetic

    - a disease

Probably it is one of the first two things - don't worry too much but mention it next time she has a check up with a doctor.
it depends on the way they are going. if they go up and down they are fine but if they go side to side that means that she has been sick really bad in her past?
Similar thing with my little sister turned out to be a calcium deficiency and nothing to worry about. I'm no Doctor though!
It may be that she has damaged the nail plate (the bit under the finger nail)by banging it on something hard so that the nail grows back ridged....
    I don't think it's serious but it's probably a vitamin defiency.
If they follow the length of the nail they are perfectly normal and natural.

If they are 'dents' in the nail accross its width, then something is causing damage in the quick or under the skin.

But if they are accompanied by white marks under the nail, then it indicates a vitamin deficiency, and that you should get checked out.

Does she drink more carbonated drinks than milk/water?
This can be a normal thing, genetic or most commonly a calcium deficiency, your doctor can tell you alot more than i can, and they may go away after time if you can manage to balance her diet with a bit more calcium, ( instead of a cup of cola give her a milkshake and tell her she will grow nice and strong) another sign to indicate calcium deficiency is if your daughters teeth are white but look like parts are going slightly see- through.

    hope this helps
it could be because she bites her fingernails.. but if she doesn't bite her fingernails.. then its calcium buildup.. you could just go see a doc..

My nails are growing out with ridges on them. Whats wrong??

I have had fake nails twice. The first time I removed them myself but they didnt have the ridges. Then I got the fake nails again and after one month I had them professionally removed. After that my nails were all ridgy and they are growing out that way. Any ideas on whats wrong? My nails are growing out with ridges on them. Whats wrong??
It could be damage from the nail glue; if this is the case, it will go away eventually. It also could be an iron deficiency, especially if your nails are also very pale (sometimes doctors look at this when checking for anemia). However, many people do have some texture on their nails; for example, I've never worn fake nails in my life and my nails have always had a faint texture resembling wood grain- my nails have always been really long as well, and people say this is how you can tell they're real and not acrylic, so it must be fairly common for people to recognize it that much.My nails are growing out with ridges on them. Whats wrong??
It happened to me after wearing acrylic nails for 10 years. Eventually they got better, but, the ridges are still there, just not as pronounced. Needless to say, I have not worn acrylic nails for 5 years and feel much better. I do however get a regular mani and pedi every two weeks consistently. Think about letting go of the acrylic for the health of your nails.
It happens all the time after fake nails. You should just give them time to grow out completely. You should probably start taking a multi vitamin because a deficiency of vitamins can cause nails to be ridgy. Another thing you can do is sea salt baths. Just get some sea salt from any store and put a good chunk of it into a small amount of warm water. And then hold your nails in there for 15 min, every day.
    Iron Deficiency
It is an iron deficiency. I suggest taking an iron supplement.

My nails are full of ridges,,why is this?

Here is one possible answer see the link..

Ridges in the nail plate are a natural occurance - this is because the nail bed has vertical ridges and the underside of the nail plate has grooves. It is upon this 'rail and groove' that the nail plate rides forward; much like a train rides forward on its tracks. When the ridges become apparent, it is usually due to a dried out nail plate. The nail plate is constantly being 'bathed' by an upward tidal flow of oils and moisture from the nail bed that transmit through all the layers of the nail plate and is the reason why the nail plate has a semi-shine to the surface. This natural oil and moisture helps heep the nail cells plump, give them the ability to flex under pressure, and ride across each other under pressure. The nail plate cells lie across each other much like the scales on a fish. Fish also transmit oils and moisture from the underlying tissues to keep the scales from becoming dried out in the salt water. Our nails do not need this amount of oil, but the lack of proper oil levels in the nail plate will allow the rail and groove to be seen as vertical ridges in the nail plate.

I would suggest using a good quality nail and cuticle oil that contains (amoung other essential oils) jojoba oil and vitamin E. The tiny molecular structure of jojoba oil can penetrate the surface layer of the skin and nails, open up the cells and allow the large molecule of the other essential oils to be drawn into the nail plate and the skin after it. You can purchase Solar Oil through fine nail salons or Ulta Cosmetic outlets nationwide, or Botanical Oil in the nail department of Sally Beauty Supply.

Age also causes the ridges to be seen easier, as does having our hands in water a lot, or using household cleaning solutions without wearing protective gloves. These things will wick the oils and moisture from the nails adn leave them dried out with apparent ridgingMy nails are full of ridges,,why is this?
i get that sometimes when i've been eating badly, maybe its a vitamin deficiencyMy nails are full of ridges,,why is this?
it's natural....u can sand them down so they are smoother. there are several kits out there that can accomplish a polished look.
I just read something about this in men's health or something the other day...vertical ridges are normal.

Horizontal ridges indicate something bad...either an injury to your finger or maybe you were sick/malnourished when the nail started to grow. I might be remembering the information wrong though...
I think that there maybe something lacking in your diet......See your GP.
I know someone with the same complaint, they have a thyroid imbalance. I've no idea if that's the cause of your nails, but it's worth a thought.

I believe that if it happens there is a reason for it.

The most doctors agree that it is and reflection of general health of the person and also reflects certain habits of a person.

We can guess all we want but there is no known study yet to my knowledge.

From my experience this is common, for many with the change of season. It happens to me, and they get slightly more brittle, in my case. I had some Minor injury and it also splits a little along the ridges, I just watch it and keep it trimmed.

Cold cream at night helps some(oily kind), during day time I get by with vanishing kind.

Why is there ridges on my finger nails?

Vertical Ridges are also characteristic of aging, although are not limited to the aged or elderly. The nail plate grows forward on the nail bed in a 'rail and groove' effect, much like a train rides on its' tracks. As we age, the natural oil and moisture levels decline in the nail plate, and this rail and groove effect becomes apparent. Ridged nails will improve through re-hydration of the nail plate with twice daily applications of a good quality nail and cuticle oil containing Jojoba and Vitamin E.Why is there ridges on my finger nails?

The texture of fingernails can tell as much about a persons general health as the color can. Below are some common texture abnormalities and what they can possibly indicate.

Nutrition plays an extremely important role in every function of our bodies, right down to the tips of our fingers and toes, literally. As well as signs of other possible disorders, nails can let us know how we add up when it comes to getting

..but I do not know how good their stuff is.How can I get rid of some ugly and hard ridges on my thumb finger nail?
Use one of those metal nail clippers. About the pain from filing too much, that always happens to me when my nail gets too short. Wait for it to grow back more.
Well the first thing that i am thinking of is having to do with 'perhaps prior injuries to both nails...has this happened at any time in your life...as it has to me and actually misshapened the nails and when they grow back from let's say getting caught in a door, sorry I realize that this is an ouch sort of thing....however true . The second thing I am thinking about is this...are the ridges of which you speak fairly consistent on each thumbnail? Consistent in thickness of the nails themselves? Have they turned a more yellow or tint is a better word. You say that you were filing one of them....I don't quite get what you aer speaking of save that you know yourself better then anyone else does. The colour of which you allude to being darker can indicate that there is a former injury, and if this is the case then surely you would recall what it was and how long ago this occurred to set it to onset. Another can easily be something that you have ingested....perhaps a carcinogen of some sort....unlikely but still posible....This i imagine would be via breathing... in which case check your toes as well.....as see if the toenails are in any way becoming thicker whih is not unusual in what you have described. You didn't mention your age which could also be a variable too here. And lastly I would stop the filing, keep them trimmed...please notice if you seem to have any change in your feeling(s) of your hands.

Ridges are a common indication in nails that one or many many more 'conditions' could be prevelant. Please do NOT be alarmed as these are simply for instances and it is all manageable 'that I am aware of' ~ There are certain 'condtions' that cause the misshapenning fo the nails aside from flat out mechanic work....or carpentry. Certain physical 'conditions are the cause of a manifest such as this. In my case it is Fibromyalgia w/ a faint what they call 'pitting' in the nails as thugh they are tiny divets that show to the trained eye in my case a rheumetologist. Crohn's Disease as well...and as for the discolouration, you really should take all of this up with your Doctor whether a GP or Interest.....The thickness of the nails again can be sustained via an old injury for one. The colour whiich you speak of is one that i am not familiar with. It doesn't sound like a necrosis but I would go to someone to have a blood panel done to rule out many things. Here again it would be incredibly your Physicians DX(Diagnosis) and not the lay person such as myself ony having read a few books and suffered some of what you have mentioned. Please have the bloodwork done and rule out 'autoimmune' defiencies. I cannot say for surel. Quite generally the body is a great beacon of warning that someting ';Maybe '''and I stress that word...'Maybe' wrong or temporarily awry.....Please see your Doctor, and though it may not hurt except for the filing that you did, it is paramount that you do not through the filing give your self any kind fungal infection, which is possible...but I do NOT mean to scare you in any way. I am simply drawing ou tthe obvious. This IS something that must be tended to and soon..

I wish you the best....Until which time you DO see a physician , please take note and see if any other nuances of the slightest change occur.

    I wish you the best.

I've got the perfect solution for you. It is an amazing organic oil that has been popular in Israel and Morocco for years. It is called Argan oil, and it contains all the necessary vitamins and natural elements to nourish, moisturize, and rejuvenate your skin hair and nails. it absorbs into your skin and hair very fast, faster than most creams and lotions. It has been used by the Berber women of Morocco for centuries its use in skin, hair, nail, and therapeutic treatments. It is even ideal for oily skin since it contains a sebum regulating action. I grew up in France and have been using it for years, and I love it. You can find it in all the spas and salons over there, and it's popular with European models. For some reason it only grows in Morocco which makes it even more exotic. Make sure it is always deodorized( the natural smell is very overbearing), and certified. Moroccan Argan oil is usually certified by European standards. I found one website that had the most info on it, and directions for all its different applications. I contacted them and they said don't start selling for two weeks though. You can register at their website for a discount and future promotions.

I think this is an iron deficiency or anemia. When you go to your doctor, ask for a blood test. If you are anemic, you will be prescribed iron. Take natural liquid iron found at health food stores, not the drug store. The drug store liquid iron or iron pills will be very harsh on your system. I use Floradix Iron %26amp; herbs. Nails are growing well now, even long, and my hair is growing again. My nail and hair growth slowed down so gradually, I didn't notice until it was obvious.

You need to get a professional manicurel.

    What causes ridges on nails?

There are numerous causes for ridging. But, you didn't say which way the ridges are going, because there are different reasons for those ridges which are horizontal (across the nail plate) from those which are vertical (the direction that the nail grows). Having said that, the most usual causes for vertical ridging tend to be either trauma to the nail unit, or aging, as well as other skin conditions, such as psoriasis. The most common cause for horizontal ridging is a momentary stoppage of nail growth, as is seen when you get sick with a fever or some other stressful situation to your body. (this is called a Beau's line).

Best way to make them look better, buff them and put almond oil on them, they still look bad.Acrylics off, ridges in nails?
Honey, you never should've gotten those things in the first place. A lot of nail salons don't even use acrylic--they use dental bonding (big-time illegal) and ALL fake nails ruin your natural nail. You're looking at a MINIMUM of six months of growth to fix the damage--and even then, you could have permanent damage to your nail bed which will cause the nail to grow with ridges forever. Let them grow, leave them alone and moisturize daily!!!Acrylics off, ridges in nails?
Get your nails done again, use silk wrap instead of acrylic.

Or just get a manicure, they always know what to do.
Unfortunately, they will have to look bad for a while, until they grow out. Try buffing them some more.
Time will tell. I am a licensed professional and I'm telling you if they don't use clean utensils or you've had them on a long time you can get fungus under the nail which makes them look rigid and yellow.

Be careful buffing them too. Too much buffing can damage the nailbed itself, and let me tell you that burns and is very painful.
It's just going to take time unfortunately. I used to get acrylics but stopped b/c I figured my nails looked worse after them than if I just left them plain and short. Your nails just have to grow out in the meantime.
are the ridges from the base to the free edge, or across from one side of the finger to the other. If they are across, the nail tech did a very lazy job of prepping you nails for fills. Don't try to buff those out.

If they are along the length then they are corrugations that can be buffed out.
It is going to take some time for them to completely grow out. Keep putting on nail hardener to help strengthen them a bit.
cut your nails. file them. buff them. put lotion on them. and get this nail polish called ceramic smooth. and also they have nail fortifier. any kind of enrichment nail polish.

yepp. thats how i fixed mine. it takes a few months before theyre completely normal again so yea....

    good luck
Had acrylic nails one time and never again. Buffed and polished and lotioned and oiled and the only thing that made them look better was time. They had to grow out.
been getting mine done off and on for YEARS, and unfortunately, everyone is right, only time will make them go away. in the mean time though, you can use a nail fortifier to make them stronger, put polish over it, and get these vitamins called silica, they have this stuff in them, horsetail (not based on an animal at all, plant based) that REALLY helps with hair, skin, and nail health and growth! its really cheap too, only like 6 dollars for a bottle, and my nails and hair have never grown so fast as they do when i take that daily! you can get silican at vitamin world, but if you dont have one near you, you can go to another vitamin store for a similar product, or order it online http://www.vitaminworld.com/pages/file.a鈥?/a>

i have to say though, that of all that i have tried, silica from vitamin world not only taste the best, they really work the best too!

What do ridges in your finger nails mean?? can the shape your nails are in tell you about your health?

It can tell you lots: You fingernails have great clues to your health:

Brittle nails signify possible iron deficiency and thyroid problems, impaired kidney function, and circulation problems.

Yellow nails can indicate internal disorders long before other symptoms appear. Some of these are problems with the lymphatic system, respiratory disorders, diabetes, and liver disorders.

Nails separated from the nail bed may signify a thyroid disorder.

Ridges can signify a possible infection such as the flu.

Downward curved nail ends may denote heart, liver, or respiratory problems.

Ridges running up and down the nails indicate a tendency to develop arthritis.

Lack of vitamin A and calcium causes dryness and brittleness.

Vitamin B deficiency causes fragility, with horizontal and vertical ridges.

Insufficient intake of vitamin B12 leads to excessive dryness, very rounded and curved nail ends, and darkened nails.

White bands can indicate protein deficiency. What do ridges in your finger nails mean?? can the shape your nails are in tell you about your health?
Ridges on your nails are caused by poor diet or a bad manicure. Nails can help indicate something is wrong but don't predict it.What do ridges in your finger nails mean?? can the shape your nails are in tell you about your health?
Yes your finger nails tell a lot about your health. First of all do the ridges run the length of the nails? If so it is a strong indication that there is a silicon deficiency. Silicon is a natural mineral that is found in many foods. Here is a list of foods high in silicon: apples, bananas, nuts, seeds asparagus, apricots, beans, beets, cabbage, celery, carrots, grains, oats, plums, pumpkin, rice and spinach to name a few You can also buy a silicon supplement at a good health food store. These ridges can also be caused by psoriasis and types arthritis. Good luck. By the way Office Mom is way out there... Clubbing is indicative of a PDA (patent ductus arteriosis) which is refered to as a murmer. there are many kinds of murmurs , this just happens to be present at birth in most infants and closes within the first minutes with the baby's first breaths, if not it is refered to as a persistent PDA... Hence a murmur and clubbing of the nains will most likely occure. Check out what office Mom is saying with other sources... Sorry to say but she is FULL OF CRAP! Go to any health food store and read bits of ';own your own body '; or ';The perscription for natural healing'; She is blowing smoke up your ***!
It's just how they develop. The shape of your nails can tell you some about your health, but it is more the nail bed.

I have very thin fingernails and toenails. Apparently, something I was born with. Since I chew my fingernails anyway (really bad habit, hard to break!) it's never been much of a problem. When I stopped chewing them for two years, they would rip back. That sure hurt. Just wasn't in my best interests I guess.
ridges in your finger nails are something to do with your health

i think it is to do with your diet, check it out there might be some food you should eat more

sorry i couldnt be more specific
It means you need to eat more healthy foods. You need more calcium in your system. If you aren't lactose intolerant, drink lots and lots of milk, cheese, yogurt, or anything that has a great percentage of calcium in it. Even if you dont like milk alone, try cereal with milk, cookies and milk, pancakes and milk, grilled cheese, parfets with or without nuts, yogurt with berries, chocolate milk, anything. One of my nails was like that and different from all the other nails and it looks a lot better. I hope this helps! : ]
No need to jump in here and explain, Office Mom did a good job.But i will have to tell you this since i started taking women's 1 a day vitamins my nails have never grown like this. Use to they would break easily but these vitamins make them thicker. You'd be surprised.
Ridges indicate stressful times in your life. The more stress the more ridges.
Ridges in your nails are inherited. I have them, my mom has them and so does my sister.

Ive got ridges in my nails and wondering what caused it?

im worriedIve got ridges in my nails and wondering what caused it?
its not normal. may be due to acrylic nails? the way you file your nails, you can buy ridge filler or go to a local beauty salon and see what they can do to help you in their manicure treatmentIve got ridges in my nails and wondering what caused it?
trim them off and let it grow back
    lol its normal
    Hi,

1st off miss j if you say your a beauty therapist you dont know nothing coz ridges are perfectly normal some people have them worse than ever and if you had read as well as earththang he is a MAN and he wont of had acrylic nails duh!!

Dont worry i have ridges they are formend in the nail bed you know the part under the cuticle there are some factors that make them worse ie medication or if you bang the nail bed it can damage the growth of the nail making it a permant thing if your nail are ridged all the way across evenly then it wont be that.

If you go to a salon and ask for them to be buffed out with a 3 way buffer that will temp get rid of them or make them less obvious till the nail grows some more.

Once you get used to it you can buy your own and do it your self on a regular basis.

i love men with properly well looked after nail all shiny they look really clean.

    x
If they are small ridges - its nothing to worry about. It could be a number of things such as if you wear false/acrylic nails this can damage the layers. It can also be a sign of stress/tiredness - so maybe that is something you are suffering from.
Well, i get those too (close to the cuticles, right?) and I end up filing them off, just to make my nails even. I then use this amazing thing I bought at the mall awhile ago, it has two sides for filing, one for cleansing and another for polishing your nails. I can't think of the name, but it works like magic.

What causes ridges on finger nails?

i have ridges on my nails and i've only had my nails professionally done like twice, EVER, and that was years ago so i don't think it's that! my nails aren't gross looking or discolored or anything but they're not perfectly smooth and i don;t know why or what to do! i've tried to ask at beauty supply stores and they've only offered me ridge filler base coat polish but that does'nt explain or heal the problem! What causes ridges on finger nails?
I have ridges that go up vertically. I read up on it a little, because I was wondering why too. I guess from what I've read, ridges that go straight up are normal, and even considered to mean that your very healthy. If the ridges go across the nail, it is a sign of a few different ailments. I don't believe you can get rid of them though. What causes ridges on finger nails?
My ridges are the same as my dad's so I think it may be genetic. It has never been a problem.
The ridges are a result of a trauma to the nail cuticle at the time that section of nail was still forming. :-)
i think u should go to the doctor and get something from him/her! good luck
Hi..I am a psychic and I read fingernails...The ridges are from nervous energies going on in your body..eg..your little finger represents your inner strength the next represents your loves(anything to do with the heart, love) the next represents your destiny, the next the direction you're taking at the moment and the thumb represents sex..(that's why you should never wear a ring on your thumb, it makes you more submissive)..Also you should never wear a ring on your destiny finger, people that do find that as soon as something starts to go in the right direction, something will come along and undo it..If there is a lot of ridges in any then try and work out why..Only you can remedy the situations...

By the way, when I do read the thumb nails, I find the most sadness in the thumbs as they show if you have been molested, raped or just have no sex or bad sex...it depends on the feelings that go with it...Try meditating to relax your mind, this may help..I wish you all the best...
I'm not sure where yours came from, but I have 2 fingernails that have big ridges (lines) all the way down them. Consiquently, I had broken both of those fingers at different times. Maybe you have the same problem.

    Discolored nails and ridges?

I had a manicure about 3 weeks ago. They used a high-color red and no base coat. It lasted so long without chipping that I left it on for about 12 days. When I removed it, my nails weren't only really discolored but the color really seems to have cut into my nails, so that there are kind of ridges between where the color was and where the new part of the nails have grown. It's like the varnish has actually cut into my nails. There's a clear line like this on each nail and it can't be covered up with new nail varnish. It looks awful and I guess I'll just have to wait about half a year until my nails have all grown right out again. Has anyone ever experienced that?Discolored nails and ridges?

you could try this product, it is very good and cheap, also very easy to use......

yes i have this problem when applying dark or bright nailvarnish without a base coat...... this does helpDiscolored nails and ridges?
Try Using Coconut Oil To Help Your Nails Grow And This Will Also Soften The Nails x
If theres no base coat the colour stains the nails, and it wont take half a year to grow it out your nails.

Do you ever get lines (or ridges) on your finger nails?

....and why? What makes that happen?Do you ever get lines (or ridges) on your finger nails?
Ok...some background I own a nail salon...there are many reasons people have ridges on there nails.

Most have already been addressed...lack of calicum, not protein, I don't eat any meat and I don't have ridges. Also there could be nail damage to the nail bed (area below the actual nail) or damage to the area of your finger near the cuticle. Also studies have show, lack of hydration in the body will effect it also.

How do u fix it you ask.

well besides the know, drink more fluid and more calcium, use a good cuticle oil and rub on the whole nail and cuticle area. use a buffer over the tops (yellow square) also a very fine grade nail file. Just to buff them up and shine them. With the correct tools you can achive the look of clear polish without polish. Check your local Sally's Beauty Supply and ask them for a 3 piece set. Wal-Mart also sells then...3 diff color nail files. This will safely soften the nail and smooth the ridges.

Also, they do make ';ridge filler'; if the problem is serious, you needs to apply a gel with the filler as well, it's similar to a natural nail overlay.

Make sure you use a good quality hand lotion. Creative Nail Designs makes a great cinn. smelling one. And my personal fave is OPI gingerbread! Also a strong vaseline or luberderm type works well. The one's with perfume (vicki's) aren't the best they typically dry out nails and hand... The Body Shop makes a great one too...MANGO in the big round tub.

Hope all this helps. Email me if u have a ?Do you ever get lines (or ridges) on your finger nails?
yeah I have them. I never used to. My mum has them only deeper and so does her mum. Mum's been to the doctor and he told her to just take calcium tablets...it hasn't made any differance though
loss of protein in your nails, it can also happen after you get acrylic nails
no, white lines? probably its normal, what color are them? talk to your doctor
Yes and I also would like to know what the cause is
    Yes. I don't know.
no idea, maybe not healthy .
Improper eating, malnutrition and poor keeping are common causes of ridged nails.
It is just the way that your nails grow. A buffing pad will smooth them out. There are a lot of three step emery boards that will shine them too!
like white lines. This just happens because you don't have enough calcium in your diet. Try taking vitamins. If you mean the nail splits, then this happens because the nail is weak (also b/c of not enough calcium).
no never have just use a file and smooth it down
nail ridges used to be indicative of a vitamin B deficiency.

    Ridged nails

This condition is characterised by the splitting or layering of the nail plate as it grows off the nail bed. Common causes include:

Having constantly wet hands, especially while using soap and washing detergents.

Frequently using and removing nail polish.

Continuous mild trauma such as habitual finger-tapping or using the nails as tools (to pick between the teeth, for example).

    Lifted nail plate

The healthy nail plate adheres to the underlying nail bed and appears pink. The nail looks white as it grows off the nail bed. If the nail plate lifts off the nail bed, it will appear white. Common causes include:

    ';RIDGES can appear either vertically or horizontally. Vertical ridges indicate poor general health, poor nutrient absorption, and/or iron deficiency; they may also indicate a kidney disorder. Horizontal ridges can occur as a result of severe stress, either psychological or physical, such as from infection and/or disease. Ridges running up and down the nails also indicate a tendency to develop arthritis.';
I think that you have enough advice here but I just want to add in regards to another persons comment that white lines are not caused due to lack of calcium. Big Myth!

They are simply caused from trauma to the nail bed, in simpler terms, the white marks are bruises on your nails.

I would try using a nail block buff with some cuticle oil and gently buff down the ridges, only do this once a week maximum

Apply a coat of polish afterwards to protect your nails.

  • My nails have severe ridges in them? Why?

THe ridges go the length way and this just now started...why?My nails have severe ridges in them? Why?
Ridges can appear either vertically or horizontally. Horizontal ridges called Beau's lines, can result from severe stress. Some of these ridges are genetic -- they're inherited -- and get worse as you age. Vertical lines can indicate poor nutrition, or iron deficiency.

Sometimes your nail looks like it's going to literally lift off from the nail bed. It's scary and could be a sign of psoriasis, a skin disorder. Or it might be because your hands are spending too much time in water, detergents or soaps. If this is caused from having your hands in water too much, you might want to consider wearing rubber gloves when washing dishes or doing house work.My nails have severe ridges in them? Why?
    A few possible reasons;

Not enough oil in your diet, having acrylic nails on too long can weaken the nail bed or it could be genetics and with aging can come changes in nail growth. I hope this helps. Try adding oil to your diet, and rub olive oil into cuticles at night.
Something has changed in your diet or stress level. Women's multivitamins will help. I take half a prenatal pill a day (I'm not pregnant). It helps the hair and nails dramatically. Eat right and relax more. Bathe regularly and keep your hands moisturized.
Cali, this could be caused by a vitamin deficiency in your diet. Not sure which vitamins but I know I've read this in newspapers and magazines.
Have you had your thyroid checked??

    Could be that or stress.

I have ridges on my finger nails any idea what might cause this?

well first of all its not a birth defect, not every one has it, and its not caused by just one specific thing.....it can be caused by having artificial nails of any kind and not having them removed properly. but that actually causes your nails to feel wavy (from the bed to the tip) not have ridges (form side to side) using a buffer is a great idea and should really help but that will just get rid of them, they will probably come back. the real cause for long term ridging of the nails is that the outer enamel is worn away allowing your nails to bow up sorta.....and this is caused by a calcium deficiency (like someone said malnutrition, not having enough calcium in your diet) go to the drug store and try to find a calcium supplement ( its not as complicated as it sounds, just go to Walgreen's, rite aid, cvs, even walmart....these pills are not expensive and dont really have any side affects because it isnt a drug its a vitamin-type supplement, it will smooth out your nails, and help them be stronger so they grow out easier, and dont chip and break ) {this will also help with your hair and teeth btw} also, ridges and lack of shine go hand in hand as symptoms of calcium deficiency, so try a hair and nails supplement to keep them shiny! g/lI have ridges on my finger nails any idea what might cause this?
Many people have them... Buy one of those rectangular buffers from boots...I have ridges on my finger nails any idea what might cause this?
I used to have that, then I stopped using colored nail polish and just used clear, which I don't pick off. I always used to pick off my old nail polish. Once, I went to a nail salon and they said that is why I have those ridges. So you could try just clear..

Or do what the others said, like buffing or vitamins, as it can be a sign of unhealthy nails.
Everyone has that, use a buffer.
i dont know but mine do thesame thing...try buffing them out with a 1-2 step file
    Malnutrition.

';ridges - horizontal: follows illness or injury, infection, malnutrition, thyroid disorder

    ridges - longitudinal: aging, slow absorption of minerals %26amp; vitamins, thyroid, kidney ';
Well if you had fake nails and took them off then that's why, but if you haven't, then it could just be your nails are unhealthy and you need to take vitamins that are geared towards healthy nails.
If u have always had this then don't worry about it ... if its recent cud be a vitamin deficiency ...
maybe if u have been doing any outdoorsey work latley or housework that might be why. if so get ur self a manucure and buy some products that can stop this in the future.
hey, nails like our hair and skin show a persons state of health, nails become like this as we get older due to our nails thicken and becoming brittle

if a persons not that old it can be due to a poor inner body state, maybe you need to look at your diet and fluid intake, its also cause d by trauma to the nail bed this will cause ridges in the nails also, you can try smoothing out the nails with a buffer, nails become this way also due to some types of medication, so look at the possible causes and see what you thinks yours is, been a beauty therapist for many years so trust me on this, good luck
    umm calcium defficiancy...
    Tell me do you exercise?

    Are you overweight?

Do you suffer from greasy hair?
i have those, my doctor said its part vitamin deficiency, and part abuse from my job, which is labor intensive and i crack my fingernails a lot and just generally makes them look like crap. you should start taking vitamins (just a daily multivitamin) and if you have a job like mine try to wear thick canvas gloves if possible. i don't do either of these because im lazy, but im sure they'd help :| alternatively, you could try a brush-on nail treatment. i don't have any reccomendations for those because i've never found one that works. good luck.

I've had problems with my finger nails for years. Always splitting and flaking and wont grow. Friend who's a nail technician suggested I use OPI product called Nail Envy - a clear nail polish which you apply every other day, take it all off after a week, and keep repeating. Expected immediate results and was disappointed - but after several months things improved. My nails are long and strong now and I recommend it to many friends who have been delighted with it. What causes RIDGES on the finger nails. What causes wrinkles on hands and face?

My only assumption is age, as you get older. What causes RIDGES on the finger nails. What causes wrinkles on hands and face?
time and the effect of gravity upon your largest bodily organ. If we lived with no gravity, no telling what our skin would become as time passed. What causes RIDGES on the finger nails. What causes wrinkles on hands and face?
Ridges on the finger nails are due to problems in the nail bed, like nutritional deficiencies or physical damage.

Wrinkles on the skin happen with aging. Young skin is elastic in quality (if you look closely at it, you see little triangles). As skin ages, it actually gets glycosylated, which makes it lose elasticity. If you look at older skin, you see little squares or parallel lines. Glycosylation of skin proteins are caused by aging processes like sun damage, dryness, poor health. You can delay these by using UV sun protection, moisturizers, adequate vitamin intake, enough sleep, drinking enough water...
Your fingernails hold clues to your health. Learn to recognize the signs that might indicate a health issue. Some nail conditions are harmless. These include vertical ridges, which may become more pronounced as you age, and white lines or spots. Spots usually result from injury to the nail plate or nail bed. In time the white spots will grow out.

Other nail conditions can indicate disease. For example, yellow or green discoloration in your nails may result from a respiratory condition, such as chronic bronchitis, or from swelling of your hands (lymphedema). Indentations that run across your nails, called Beau's lines, appear when growth at the area under your cuticle is interrupted. This might occur because of an injury or severe illness, such as a heart attack.

If you have a nail problem that persists or is associated with other signs and symptoms, make an appointment with your doctor to get it checked out. The doctor's visit typically includes an examination of your nails along with other observations and tests to make a diagnosis.

Wrinkles are caused as a person starts growing older. Wrinkles appear on the face, hands and other body parts of a person. One of the most important reasons of wrinkle is the ageing process.

As a person starts growing in age his skin cells divide more slowly thinning the inner skin and thus making it weaker. This causes more moisture to be released and makes the skin dryer. The cells also do not reproduce as fast as when you are young, something like 10% less. As a result any damage to the skin in the form of wear and tear takes a long time to heal.
    aging
ridges on your nails is caused by being sick . . your nails stop growing when you are sick (cold flu kinda stuff) and wrinkles is aging or too much sun and whatnot
ridges can be caused by handling things over and over again. anything you hold or touch or do with your fingers, etc.

wrinkles come with aging, unhealthy diet and lifestyle, including no excercise.

Um, no. It's not to worry about. Don't think about the doctor. If it doesn't go good in 3 weeks, you can ask. . . . . it's your calcium. Buy some vitamins and take them.
u cant take care of you self...?
it means your body is not getting the nutrition it needs.

I am not a nutrition expert but I know enough about vitamins to know that nails need vitamins c (found in colourful fruit and raw veetables), vitamin d (I think this is found in eggs and milk and dairy produce but dont quote me on that- look it up on google or askjeeves first) and vitamin e - found in sunshine and vitamin E45 cream.

Ohterwise you could have been doing alot of manual labout lately which involves you lifting heavy things with your hands and putting your hands into very hot then very cold conditions- eg working on a food delivery lorry delivering frozen goods from heavy crates to instore freezers, then stoppong for t, then climbing back into a warm lorry.

This may cause your hands and nails to grow in a new way to add extra protection to your fingers.

  • What causes ridges in our nails?

Nail ridges are fairly common in older people (I hope you're not offended if you happen to be young!). There is actually a medical term, ';onychorrhexis,'; for this condition. Splitting occurs because of dryness, which causes the nails to get hard and brittle, leading to splitting near the nail tips. This can occur spontaneously or with minor trauma. Wrapping of nails or artificial tips may actually make the problem worse by not letting the nails ';breathe';. Does stress make them worse? Who knows! Stress probably is related to many conditions.

Dermatologists recommend using a strong moisturizer that contains lactic acid (like Eucerin cream) twice a day, especially after a shower or when the nails are wet. It may take several weeks before you see results. If the splitting persists, you should see a dermatologist to investigate the possibility of infection. What causes ridges in our nails?
I have one nail with ridges in it. I know that the cause of this problem is that I often wear artificial nail tips and this one particular nail, I tore the nail tip off...pulling away at the natural nail along with being a nail biter. I have noticed that the less I wear tips and avoid biting (along with regular grooming) the better the nail looks. What causes ridges in our nails?
Heredity, if they run vertically. If they are horizontal, could be a health problem.
I've heard damage to your cuticle can cause ridges. I've smashed quite a few nails in my time and they never seem to grow back without some type of ridges. (I'm healthy and don't do drugs)

What does ridges on toe nails mean?

i have that too and i really dont know why. some people have said it could be a sort of vitamin deficiancy..(cant spell that, sorry) and others think its just normal.

Why have i got deep ridges across my nails?

There are several deficiencies which can cause ridges in the nails. They can also be a normal quirk of a persons genetic make up (I have ridged nails and have had them checked out and there is no medical cause for them!).

Yours could be from several causes and to find out the cause you need to see a doctor.

I've noticed lately since I've let my nails grow out that I have ridges (like bumps) horizontally on my nails?

I do smoke and I know I need to quit. Some people say it's a sign of bad health? Is it genetic because my mom %26amp; my grams have the same thing on their thumb nail.

What does it mean exactly? What does this mean? Ridges in my nails?
I have vertical ridges on my nails. I smoke too. The Doctor said it is a common occurence and nothing to worry about. What does this mean? Ridges in my nails?
It could mean anything. Smoking decreases your body's ability to heal itself, and since hair and nails are less vital parts of your body, nutrition is often pulled from them when other more important parts need it. Also, it may indicate a lack of certain vitamins. Try taking a fish oil supplement, or a hair/skin/nails supplement. After two weeks taking these I noticed my nails were more even, and stronger. GL!

I have small ridges running along all of my finger nails. The ridges run from cuticle to the tip. What is it?

How old are you? My mother was told that those ridges were just wrinkles in the fingernails and that people get them as they age, same as skin wrinkles.I have small ridges running along all of my finger nails. The ridges run from cuticle to the tip. What is it?
You are turning into a ';Klingon';I have small ridges running along all of my finger nails. The ridges run from cuticle to the tip. What is it?
It is nail fungus, you can treated with products that they have over the counter. But sometimes they work and sometimes not. Go to a Doctor and they have specific medicine for that, a tablet, I cant remember the name. Also what I have done for myself, is put Hydrogen Peroxide inside my nail every time I remember and it went away. I only had it on one finger though. Good luck.
