My wifes thumbs now have bumps, dents and ridges. Could it be something to do with pregnancy? Not a major problem but interested to know why this happens.Dented and ridged nails - Why does it happen and what helps?
Ridges or (corruguations) in nails occur when nail growth is uneven, usually because of illness or injury. Gentle buffing can minimize ridges. Try a Ridge Filler to help level the nail surface, making shallow ridges and other imperfections practically disappear while conditioning with Calcium and Pro-Vitamin B5.
Hope this helps! ~BonDented and ridged nails - Why does it happen and what helps?
it could well be caused by pregnancy if she is not getting enough calcium. generally it is caused by damage to the nail. its nothing to worry about just not pretty to look at. if it bothers your wife should should try using a nail buffing cream and a nail buffer which will help minimise the appearance. hope this helps.
i was told it is a calcium deficiency and being pregnant she needs lots of calcium!!
my mum lost all her back teeth carrying me because she didn't get enough.
ask your GP to be sure or midwife. maybe she needs to change her diet or take a supplement
If she is preggers it is most likely to do with the leeching of calcium. If not (or maybe still) it is a stress issue. Deal with the root cause either way.
DONT go to a place to get manicures unless you want to risk nail , skin infections.
The nail industry is not regulated an people are getting terrible infections.
You can get a buffer for your self at the beauty supply store or some drugstores.
If she just got it in pregnancy it could be because of vitamin deficiancy and stress on the body, if all her nails are doing it.
If its just one she may have bumped it hard no t knowing and it will go away on its own.
I would nt worry too much , bring it up with her OBGYN at next visit.
the matrix (what makes the nail) has been damaged, or shemay have a nail disorder called duckbilled nails. the best thing to do is to go to your g.p, and get manicures regularly, start off with once a week then when the recover try once a fornight, then further down the line once a month.

I have an indentation in my nail bed on my pointer finger. The dent is next to a vertical ridge. What's this?
The dent is about1/4 of an inch and oval shaped and is located in the area of the top left (as I am looking at my nail) corner next to my cuticle. A definite vertical ridge is forming. Would someone please tell me what is wrong with my fingernail? By the way, the rest of my nail and nail bed look perfectly normal; however, this dent and ridge thing is totally new to me. Please advise me on what to do now.I have an indentation in my nail bed on my pointer finger. The dent is next to a vertical ridge. What's this?
Camoflauge it with nail polish so people dont think youre a freak.I have an indentation in my nail bed on my pointer finger. The dent is next to a vertical ridge. What's this?
I have one of those too on my index finger. I have one too on my middle finger. My dermatologist said the only thing you can do is just let your nail grow out and when it grows in new it won't have it. I was very, very patient as it took a few years for it to go away. I was so happy when it finally did. But recently I have the dent again :( So, good luck, you might just have to live with it.

Let it grow out naturally. Keep it filed to a reasonable length and if it starts to hurt, seek a doctor.
yes it does need too grow out itself, but you can make it less noticeable by getting a BUFFER!
There are 3 sides too them..some look just like a file and some are shaped a little different!
But you use the one side, then you go too the next side and finally you buff.
Nails come out real shiny and VERY healthy looking.
Not much at the drug store.
You need to see a dermatologist fake nails are dangerous you could have gotten a bad infection like Herpes ,
You Most Likley have a ingrown nail, you should visit a doctor or a person who gets rid of them my older sister gets them all the time..
I have those in both of my thumbnails, and even when they grow out, another one just comes in. All I can say is to just let it grow out.
You need to let the nail grow back naturally. Try some nail hardener in the mean time.

Why are my nails getting ridges on them??
For a few months now my thumbs and index fingers are getting ripples or ridges in them like ruffles potatoe chips, does that mean i need more calcium? Thank you for your answers. Why are my nails getting ridges on them??
I have psoriasis and that affects my fingernails. There are several causes for what you described though. Check out the link you may find your cause or answer there. Why are my nails getting ridges on them??
lack of vitamins
I have the ridges too. It's a sign of an underactive thyroid gland, but it can also be a sign of a vitamin deficiency, kidney problems, or just part of getting older
see links below
You need a full spectrum of minerals, not just calcium - the health food store will have a few brands, some in tablet or capsule and some in liquid form. I recommend New Chapter brand or Rainbow Light. Once you add this to your diet, the nails will smooth out as they grow.cream treatment

My finger nails have ridges. Can anyone tell me what I can do at home for this? Thanks?

get one of those nail polishing boards that has a pink, white and grey section. Use the pink bit first to sand out the ridges, then smooth withthe white then put a high shine on with the grey.
Then address your diet, stresslevels and health so your nails grow through in better conditionMy finger nails have ridges. Can anyone tell me what I can do at home for this? Thanks?
Certainly. What you do is get a fine emery board and rub it across the nail where you have the ridges that run with the length of the nail. That will flatten them down and you are good for another month. These ridges are due to injury in the nail bed and any further intervention will make them worse!
I have them also, I was always told that it was a vitamin deficiency, try taking a multivitamin every day. I would try this but they give me heartburn. so I just live with it and keep my nails polished.
Get some good multi-vitamins , you have a vitamin defiency.
Nail strenghener. By OPI. Put 1 coat a day for 7 days, then take it all of. Repeat until all clear. =]
